Fender flares are a vehicle accessory that fits over the wheel wells of most truck and SUV models, are contoured to the vehicle’s fenders, and are available in various styles.
Besides adding a unique look to your vehicle, they can cover up rust, dents, dings, scratches, and scrapes—and protect that area of the vehicle from further damage.
Additionally, if the tires are larger than standard, they may be required by law.
The following tools are recommended to make installation easier:
For easy installation, these tools are recommended:
Before you begin, here’s important information and helpful tips:
Important note: If your fender flares have the edge trim and pocket hardware already installed, you can skip to step three below. If they don’t, begin with step one.
Peel away the red vinyl backing from the edge trim tape by two or three inches.
Place the adhesive side on the flare’s inner side, at the top edge where your flare comes into contact with your truck or SUV.
Press the edge trim along the top edge of the flare in one-foot increments. As you work around the top edge, keep pulling the red vinyl backing free.
Place a washer on each bolt. Then thread each washer and bolt through one of the flare pocket holes. The head of the bolt and the washer should be on the outside.
Then place the nuts on the end of each bolt and tighten them.
Turn the front tire outward to make the flares easier to install.
Remove the factory-installed wheel arch molding, as well as any mud flap fasteners, if applicable. You can see which fasteners to remove here. You might need a pry tool to remove these fasteners.
Then reinstall the wheel arch’s factory fastener from the rear underside. Hold up the appropriate flare to confirm it will fit.
Install the included screws into the two upper and lower factory holes. Don’t tighten the screws all the way yet.
Use a grease pencil or a marker to mark a hole for drilling. You can use the upper rear hole in the flare as guidance. (If your vehicle came with factory-installed mud flaps, you won’t need to locate and mark that hole.)
Remove the flares so you can drill in the marked area.
Hold up the fender flare to the vehicle again and install it using the supplied screws in the upper and lower factory locations. As before, don’t fully tighten these screws.
Then reinstall the factory fastener, located at the front of the wheel arch molding. Don’t fully tighten these either.
Next, install the self-tapping screw into the freshly-drilled hole. Push the flare toward the vehicle, and tighten this screw fully.
Note: If your vehicle has factory-installed mudflaps you can skip this step. Instead, you’d reinstall the factory fastener that was removed from the mudflap.
Press the fender flare to the vehicle and fully tighten every fastener.
You can find detailed installation instructions and images here. These steps are more in-depth, and the steps will be numbered differently in that guide compared to this blog post.
